Women Share the Shed
A new women’s group at Ben’s Shed is a community development initiative that aims to create a learning and working space for women of the valley interested in woodwork, the proper use of tools and many other activities associated with ‘a shed’.
Last Friday we had twenty local women gather for a morning tea introductory session at Ben’s Shed in Yarra Junction (and another ten expressions of interest). There was great enthusiasm for the plan to open the Shed as a women’s space every week, and a series of 8 start up sessions is now planned to commence in term 2.
President of Ben’s Shed, Rob Barber, says the course will be designed to give participants a thorough knowledge of the correct use of a variety of tools, but will also extend to cover different types of woods, fixings and techniques. There is a plan to run two sessions every Friday and more information will be provided closer to the start date.
Women attending the info session were keen to develop skills that allowed them to do their own odd jobs around the house in a self-reliant way, and many were keen to expand their artistic and creative practices using new materials such as timber and metal.
We are very excited to have such positive and enthusiastic response and thank Ben’s Shed for providing such a welcoming space.
