About Ian De La Rue (OAM)

Ian-De-La-Rue-Chairman

Founding Chairman – Warburton Community Bank (1999–2005)
Steering Committee Member (1998–1999)

Ian De La Rue’s legacy as a passionate community leader, visionary, and founding Chairman of the Warburton Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank continues to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.

From his early involvement as a Steering Committee Member in 1998, through to his appointment as the first Chairman of the Board (1999–2005), Ian’s tireless enthusiasm and deep commitment were instrumental in shaping the bank’s community-focused foundation.

Following his passing in 2007, Ian was posthumously awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2008 Australia Day Honours for his service to the community — a fitting tribute to his enduring impact.

Ian’s connection to the Upper Yarra community began in 1989, when he became the Owner/Operator of Millgrove Licensed Grocers. A former banker and devoted Western Bulldogs supporter, he quickly became one of the region’s most respected and beloved figures.

Beyond the Community Bank, Ian gave his time and heart to numerous local organisations, including (but not limited to):

  • Winterfest Committee
  • Warburton Chamber of Commerce
  • Warburton Advancement League
  • Warburton Bowls Club
  • Warburton Millgrove Football Club Supporters Group

The tireless enthusiasm and passion you showed in your many roles was truly remarkable. Your exemplary leadership, caring nature and generosity was an inspiration to us all. Your outstanding contribution to the community will always be remembered.”
Board of Directors, Shareholders and Staff of Warburton Community Bank, June 2007

His remarkable contribution continues to be celebrated through the Youth Awards, recognising young leaders who are making a difference in the Upper Yarra — just as Ian did.

These Initiatives
